Keyboard layouts

Shavian.info has developed a Keyman package of keyboards to allow typing in the Shavian alphabet on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS, and Android.

  • Shaw JAFL (recommended), a native Shavian alphabet keyboard developed to minimise typing effort.

  • Shaw Imperial, a native Shavian alphabet keyboard based on the historical Imperial Good Companion Shavian alphabet typewriter, including letters on the number keys.

  • Shaw QWERTY (preferred by some beginners), which maps Shavian letters to the closest Latin alphabet letters in the common QWERTY layout (at least those letters with similar Latin letter). It brings ease of familiarity but, not being designed for Shavian, makes no claims to efficiency.

To use the keyboards:

  1. Download and install the Keyman app for your OS (under the “Products” tab).

  2. Using the Keyman app, add the keyboard for the language “English (Shavian)” called “Shaw JAFL”, “Shaw Imperial” or “Shaw QWERTY".

  3. You can also access predictive text on tablet and smart phone—using the Keyman app download the dictionary for English (Shavian) called “Shaw ReadLex”. This dictionary is derived from the Kingsley Read Lexicon.

For technical assistance in how to install the app and add a keyboard for your OS, please see KeymanHelp.
